Sunday afternoon the winds laid out nice and I didn’t really think the fish would cooperate due to the stirred up water but decided to run out and try anyways. Ran out solo to Blue Fish Rock setting anchor around 1245 for the start of the flood tide. Water clarity not very good plus streaks of algae blooms here and there. Only one other boat on Blue Fish Rock.

Put a chum bag on the bottom and a chum bag on top and a spread of 4 eels. Wallace’s gave me 2 giant eels, looked like conga eels they were so big but a pair of sharks chopped their heads off in short order. Just as the current started to run pretty good, had a good run, as always, the one closest to the chum bag. This guy thought he was somebody giving me a run around the boat after taking half my line on my TLD 15. He took me around the boat 4 times which ain’t easy solo in an express boat. The second time around he tried to get into the anchor line so I pulled up the anchor while fighting him. Thankfully, it’s a windless with controls on the bow. Now with all the lines in, chum bags in and anchor pulled, I could fight him without worry. First time to the side of the boat was a no-go, he saw the gaff and ran out again. Second time, I raked leaves….…meaning I just bounced the gaff off the side of his head. Third time I stuck him and got him in the boat.

My hand scale got him at 45 lbs but he sure did fight like he was bigger though. Fresh cobia steaks tonight.
