29-30 Aug 08/Overnighting on Bluefish Rock
Decided to try something different. Spent the night on the hook at Blue Fish Rock Friday night with Lanie, Fletcher, and his wife Verna. As we loaded up, meet a new friend at our docks, her name is Zsa-Zsa, a 16 year old cat who lived her whole life aboard a sailboat.

Beloved Zsa Zsa
Motor out 2 miles
to Blue Fish Rock. As soon as we set the anchor, a tug Capt who was taking the usual shortcut to the channel takes are hard turn right for me. No response from the Capt on 16 but he finally turns crossing to our stern.

Unusual Beauty

Then a storm decides to form and passes just to our north but we track it with my XM weather so we stay put taking just a little rain.
We put the cobia spread out with eels, spot, and croaker with a chum bucket on the bottom and chum bag on the top. Put the sword light down to light up the waters. I knew we would have to pick through critters and I was right. That’s pretty much all we got all night long. Sharks, rays, and skates, enough pullage to not let anyone get too much rest at night. Even caught a couple of butterfly rays.

Even caught a few unexpected ballyhoo that were darting through our lights. Was only able to manage small ones like this one but there were some horse ballyhoo there I just could not catch because they were just too fast.

At dawn, Fletcher wore out the puffer fish catching one after the other (his new name is Puff Daddy).
We finish out the tide hoping some cobia would show during the early morning but not this time.

Well no cobia for us at Blue Fish Rock so we buoy hop a few buoys in the bay and do spot a few undersized cobia. Seems lots of other boats had the same plan so they were all getting hit pretty hard. Everybody was tired from the pullage from critters all night so we didn’t stay long Saturday morning heading in to get showers and naps.
Nice night on the water. Seas laid out nice and flat after the evening storm passed. Thanks to Fletcher and Verna for spending the evening with us. No fish in the box but a pleasant evening, good company, and not much money forĀ OPEC this trip.
