22 Jun 08/Cobia, Blue Fish Rock
70 lb Cobia Blue Fish Rock
I only got to fish for cobia for 30 minutes on Saturday after being chased off by storms. So I made another attempt Sunday. After my Sunday dose of Saltwater Sunday on ESPN, I called Matt (Rockcrusher) since I knew he was going stir crazy with his boat in the shop and newborn baby girl. Matt answered the call and drove down from Richmond.
Got setup after lunch with the last of the incoming on Blue Fish Rock in 20 feet of water. Chummed the bottom and top and put out 4 lines on the bottom and 1 on top way back on a ballon. Half were live spot and half eels. Seas were flat and we were enjoying the Langley air show. Before long the SW winds shitfted to SE and went to 20 knots. Well heck not again but the radar showed the storms well north of us by 20 miles so we stuck it out. With the SE wind and the tide changed to the outgoing (wind/current opposing) the seas were stacking up and our lines and chum running towards the bow with the wind too hard to turn to turn the boat.
Well the lines were a mess so I grabbed one to keep it from the others and jigged it. First time ever I get a cobia hit while holding the rod. I feel a few taps on my eel and she takes off, for once in a good direction, away from the boat.
Lines comes tight and I set the 8.0 gamakotsu hook hard. She comes to the surface and jumps peeling drag on my TLD 15…awesome sight. Matt is busy clearing lines so he misses the aerial show. Oh crap, she is running towards the bow to my anchor line. No you don’t, I put more heat on her and decide to take her green telling Matt to get the net now. Horse her boatside and Matt is right on time with the net, first shot caught fish. Holy crap she is heavy and takes both of us to hoist her into the boat. I don’t know how Wes Blow got an 83 lber solo. High fives.

Mr. Brown

Finally a Cobia!

I tell Matt they don’t often travel alone so get the lines back out fast. Before long, another line goes off but it’s only a rat cobia about 28 inches. 20 minutes another line takes a spot line and line is peeling, probably another big cobe but pull the hook. 2 for 3 on cobia, not a bad afternoon. Chum runs out and seas still big so we run home to weigh the fish and it’s 70 lbs even and 56 inches (my personal best). She had eggs and was doing our bay a big favor by having a belly full of skates.

The Crew
I wanted a cobia for Father’s Day and Lanie fished with me all day last Sunday but didn’t get one so this is my Father’s Day present a week late.
Got the boat and fish cleaned just as the sky opened up and it started to rain. Matt, thanks buddy for coming along, don’t think I could have done it by myself.
